7 Things People Forget to Pack When Moving

Moving is an overwhelming process because there are a million things to do in such a small amount of time. So, it’s no surprise that many people forget a thing or two during the moving process. To help you avoid this, our team at Affordable Quality Moving and Storage has put together a list of items you shouldn’t forget to take with you to your new home.

The following are things that people forget to pack when moving:

1. Important Documents

If you’re moving, it is vital that you don’t forget to pack essential documents. We recommend preparing a folder or binder with all the essential documents so that you don’t leave them behind at your old home. You should carry these things with you instead of packing them in boxes and putting them in the back of a moving truck with all of your other belongings. Carry them in your own car and put them in a safe place once you get to your new home.

Important documentation includes:

  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Drivers’ licenses
  • Diplomas
  • Professional qualifications
  • Work contracts
  • Property deeds
  • Mortgage documents and rental agreements
  • Insurance policies
  • Bank statements and tax receipts
  • Vehicle registrations and auto insurance policies

2. Medicine

Medications are another item that some forget to pack. Remember to get all your medicines out of your medicine cabinet and pack them in a box of essential items. You should also sort out your medicine and throw out anything that’s expired and that you no longer need. If you are taking any specific medication regularly or think you might need it on moving day or shortly thereafter, pack it separately and bring it with you instead of packing it in the moving truck. That way, you know right where it is if and when you need it.

3. Outdoor Decorations

Many people don’t think about outdoor decorations or plants when they’re getting ready to move. So, check outside to see if you want to bring any of your outdoor décor or plants with you. Include them in your moving list so they aren’t forgotten on moving day.

4. Hidden Cash

If you have cash or other valuables locked in a built-in safe or hidden anywhere in your home, you should locate and remove these before moving day. Check carefully – once you move out, you may find it difficult to try to get them from the new owner of the property.

5. Items in the Attic

If you store seasonal items, keepsakes, or other items in the attic, garage, or other storage spaces, these can be left behind in the rush of moving. Be sure to check your attic and other storage areas well before moving day. You may even find some items that can be donated or sold, making your move a little easier!

6. Overnight Bag

We recommend packing an overnight bag for the first day at your new home. The last thing you want to do is search for a clean pair of clothes or bed sheets after an exhausting day. Preparing an overnight bag will make your life a whole lot easier. You can pack your overnight back with clean clothes, pajamas, bedsheets, and any toiletry items you will need. If you have a longer move ahead of you, you should include several changes of clothes. If you have kids or pets, be sure to pack bags for them as well with all of their essentials – and even some toys for distractions.

7. Items at the Dry Cleaner or Pharmacy

Another common thing that many people forget is to pick up clothes left at the dry cleaners or prescriptions at the pharmacy. Be sure to check with your local dry cleaner or pharmacy before you move. It is all too easy to forget clothes at the dry cleaner because you are so preoccupied with many other tasks. Some of the items we drop off at the dry cleaners may even include coats, comforters, special occasion attire, or seasonal items making it easy to forget.
