Here are a few things to know before moving to LA:
#1: You’ll Be Doing a Lot of Hosting
Unlike most big out-of-state moves, people who tell you “I’ll visit you in LA!” actually will. New LA residents will learn real quickly how little out-of-towners realize about LA geography. You might live in Beverly Hills, but that doesn’t mean you’re available to pick your in-laws up at the airport at 6:30 p.m.
Here’s what’s cool though: It won’t take much for you to seem like a lifelong resident to your out-of-town visitors. Take them to your favorite Korean spot, and you’ll seem as at home as an LA Times beat reporter. Complain about the traffic, and you’ll really sell them on your local cred.

#2: Public Transport Isn’t Great, but Uber Makes It Better!
Los Angeles has an infamously difficult public transportation system. The buses, subways, and taxis are not nearly as efficient (or prevalent) as their East Coast siblings. However, thanks to Uber and other ride-sharing services, residents are finally able to taste the freedom of not owning a car. Uber also makes having a night out on the town a lot safer for drivers.
#3: Parking Is a Science
Parking in the city will give you a headache just as much as driving will. Depending on the city you’re in, finding street parking won’t be easy, and if you find a parking structure, chances are, you will have to pay an average of $10. If you do find street parking, we highly recommend you to read the parking signs to ensure you are allowed to park there; failing to do so may result in a parking ticket (or worse)!
#4: The Lifestyle & Culture Is Different from Anywhere Else
If you are moving to LA, you will quickly notice the laid-back California attitude. Many companies throughout Los Angeles allow employees to go to work in casual attire. You will also notice that a lot of people love to hang out in cafes during all hours of the day. Healthy living is a big part of the culture here, so we're a city that encourages anything and everything new and healthy—whether it’s yoga studios, juice bars, or meditation studios.
Los Angeles is also a destination city for foodies nationwide. Many cities across Los Angeles County are cultural focal points for specific immigrant groups, which means you can find a high concentration of ethnic fare. Some of the most popular cuisines in Los Angeles include Thai, Korean BBQ, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, and Armenian food. Angelenos are spoiled for choice when it comes to sushi, tacos, and of course, burgers.
#5: Everything Is Much Further Than You Think
One of the major differences between other major cities and Los Angeles, besides the weather, is the fact that you can’t simply walk across the city as you can, say, in New York. Even driving can take a good amount of time depending on the day. For example, getting from Downtown LA to Santa Monica beach can take 20 mins on a good day, and it can take up to an hour and a half when there is a lot of traffic.
Living in Los Angeles means that you will have to deal with traffic congestion all the time. Freeways are always jammed with Monday through Friday commuters, but you shouldn’t expect much relief on weekends. You can easily get stuck on the 405 on an early Saturday morning as much as on a Monday evening. Learn to give yourself a buffer.
#6: Owning a Vehicle Is Key
Fact: it's incredibly difficult to get around LA without a vehicle. Most places of business and residence are spread out — and biking around is just not an option sometimes. Taking note of this will be important when you decide to move here. In fact, if you do plan on purchasing a vehicle before the move, then it would be wise to invest in one that has excellent gas mileage.
However, renting an apartment or purchasing a home close to your office (or places of convenience) can help alleviate potential headaches caused by commuting, especially if you’re afraid of getting trapped in rush hour traffic. Of course, there are some options for public transportation, such as city buses — but you’ll need to stay up to date on their schedule since certain lines might not run 24/7.
#7: Bring Appliances
Believe it or not, many apartments and homes in LA don’t come equipped with appliances — especially a refrigerator (a.k.a. The most essential feature in any living space). If you’re looking for ease during the moving process, then it would be best to bring your own appliances from your current place. However, if you plan on leaving your fridge, stove, and dishwasher (to name a few), then it would be best to make these essential items your first furnishings in your new living space!
#8: Affordability Varies
This is something that everyone should take note of before they decide to move to LA. Though the city is a hub for all things incredible, the cost of living here can be steep at times — whether you’re renting an apartment or purchasing a home. However, you can still find places that are incredibly affordable. Some newer neighborhoods can run as low as $700 for rent. It will be up to you to keep track of these incredible deals and snag them before they're gone!
#9: The Weather Is Incredible
Most of the country experiences merely good weather, occasionally. However, LA is famous for its bright and relaxing weather almost year-round. Indeed, there are some days in which it rains harshly — but you can expect sun and a light breeze nearly all year. It's also incredibly important that you bring some sunscreen with you whenever you're here, since the sun’s rays can get strong, just like a day at the beach!
#10: Comfort is the Dress Code
People like the vibe that LA gives off — because it's very casual and relaxing. Locals tend to dress down as often as they can. Indeed, you will often find people wearing shorts and a t-shirt year round — completely shying away from the over-the-top persona that films and television shows give LA. In fact, wearing casual clothes to upscale places is the norm out here. This means that you won't have to dress to impress when you’re heading out to dinner at a well-known dining establishment.
#11: Southern California Is So Much More Than LA
As famous as Los Angeles might be, it’s not even the best thing about being in Southern California. Ventura County, Santa Barbara, the Central Valley, Yosemite, San Diego, Joshua Tree—these are just a few of the gems only a day trip away from Los Angeles.
