Top States for Retirees

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, SmartAsset recently released their fifth annual study on the top retiree destinations: Where Retirees Are Moving – 2020 Edition. The study included people aged 60 and older who moved into a city or state versus the number of people aged 60 and over who moved out of that city or state.

In 2018, about 930,000 people aged 60 and older moved into other states. This marked an increase of about 16% from the number of people who moved in 2013. The state with the highest influx of retirees was, unsurprisingly, Florida. The state offers tax advantages for seniors, has a lower cost of living than other states, and has mostly sunny, warm weather. Arizona came in second, followed by North Carolina.

Here is a closer look at the top five states with increases in residents aged 60 and over:

  • Florida: 69,289 new residents
  • Arizona: 33,609 new residents
  • North Carolina: 14,470 new residents
  • Texas: 9,886 new residents
  • South Carolina: 8,706 new residents

Top Cities for Retirees

Retirees choose to move to new cities for various reasons. It may be the weather, the cost of living, the retirement communities, the people, or the tax benefits. It’s often a combination of these factors.

Here are the top five cities that people over the age of 60 relocated to:

  • Mesa, Arizona: 2,504 new residents
  • Spring Valley, Nevada: 2,494 new residents
  • Scottsdale, Arizona: 1,572 new residents
  • Lakeland, Florida: 1,335 new residents
  • Corpus Christi, Texas: 1,314 new residents

Where Is the Best State to Retire?

The above are places that retirees have been moving to, but where are the best states to retire? In the end, the answer to that question will be up to you. You might like the peace and quiet of a suburb or may prefer a big city. You might want to experience all four seasons or may prefer mild weather. However, there are some studies that have considered which is the best state to retire, and we'll share the results with you.

According to a Bankrate study, the following are the best states for retirement in 2021:

  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Tennessee
  • Missouri
  • Wyoming

Bankrate ranked those states based on five key factors: affordability, wellness, culture, weather, and crime. What's most important to you will depend on your financial situation, your needs, and so many other factors. If you're considering where the best state is to retire for you, you can always visit and spend some time there during different seasons. If possible, stay there for a while and see how you like the weather, the people, the activities, and more. Don't be afraid to check out retirement communities. You may be surprised to find that they have a lot to offer, particularly in terms of recreation, social events, outdoor activities, and amenities. Some 55+ communities are also less expensive and less competitive, as you won't be competing with younger buyers for the home you want.
